As he encounters each of his friends, the peril seems to increase. Cole is in one with a dead body which he disembowels to find a key in the stomach to escape his room. The five of them are blindfolded and led into separate chambers. The evening of the escape room it is revealed to be an old Bolshevik prison. Alexei’s bodyguards fortunately put a stop to all of this, but not before Cole and his group are threatened with future harm. Alexei pulls a knife and then one of the aggressors pulls a gun. When Cole tries to intervene, he is assaulted. That night, as they are clubbing, two Russians harass Erin. These include Cole’s girlfriend Erin (Holland Roden, Teen Wolf) Sam (Siya), who bombed out of the X Games this year and Cole’s long-time best friend Thomas (Denzel Whitaker). Cole is stoked as this will be live streamed on ERL only to his subscribers. We soon learn from Dash (George Jenko) that Cole is being treated to a super-scary escape room custom-made for him by the richest and most connected Russian, Alexei (Ronen Rubinstein). Now his friends, apparently as wealthy as he is, have arranged for this special trip and are taking him to Moscow. Photo courtesy of Vertical Entertainment. (L-R) Keegan Allen as Cole and Ronen Rubinstein as Alexei in the horror/thriller film “NO ESCAPE” a Vertical Entertainment release. In recent years, Cole has tried to take his viewers to the most incredible locations and encouraged his fans to scare him by suggesting frightening things that he should try. This conveniently sets up a video montage of Cole from childhood learning to record every aspect of his life. He is the very successful vlogging host of “Escape Real Life” (ERL), which is about to celebrate its ten-year anniversary.

The movie begins on an airplane where Cole (Keegan Allen) emerges from a restroom to engage his fans on his cell phone. The shocking ending and end-sequence video montage, however, raise serious questions about the credibility of the premise of the film. “No Escape” is a well-paced, engaging thriller.
#NO ESCAPE 2020 PLUS#
On the plus side, the plot never loses sight of what it is trying to do. Fear of Russia, unnecessarily intricate death traps, and torture porn all make their way into the story. Taking together elements of better films from the genre, it comes across as little more than a copy. No Escape is a cookie cutter horror movie. Much like the rest of the film, it never means anything. Along the way, No Escape also pays lip service to the shallowness of internet fame. The next two acts see increasing stakes yet somehow are less interesting. This may be the most effective part of the movie as seen in a simple lunch between Cole and his nondescript girlfriend Erin. There is nothing here that has not been seen before. This may be by necessity since the online world is filled with big personalities, but it becomes very grating. Still, he is especially obnoxious in No Escape. This type of character is seen in all types of films.

He is the annoying friend who cannot stay out of trouble. This is most obvious is Dash (George Janko). When characters do stand out, it is for all the wrong reasons. This means as things escalate, there is no emotional impact for anyone watching. Each is only given surface level development.

They are all horror movie caricatures for the modern age. Early on, No Escape introduces the audience to its cast. Those who do not watch YouTube will probably dislike this aspect of No Escape. This means in order to play their roles effectively, the cast also has to be extreme. Influencers have to be over the top to be noticed. This will be a very polarizing part of the film.
